London street opera project reaches award finals
3:24pm Tuesday 10th August 2010
A scheme which urges London's homeless to use their voices in song has reached the finals of a national competition.
The Streetwise Opera, which brings homeless people together for performances across the UK, has been shortlisted in the vote for the nation's favourite Lottery-funded project.
Their production, ‘My Secret Heart’, is competing for the Best Arts Project award.
Streetwise Opera was founded to challenge the stereotype that “the homeless” were people you step over when you come out of the opera house.
Founded in London, the project now runs weekly workshops at 11 centres across the country and aims to kick-start creative activity and personal development, which often has a knock-on effect in other areas of people’s lives.
To vote for Streetwise Opera’s “My Secret Heart”, call 0844 686 0805 or visit www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards, before August 13.
